Our Story

The company ethos is to provide professionally developed management software and to give excellent software support and training.

ProGen was founded in 1995.  The owner, Jackie Brear, was in the first batch of Computer Scientists to come out of Rhodes University so he has considerable IT experience.

Over the years Jackie has managed some of South Africa’s largest and most complicated IT sites, such as Rossing Uranium, the world’s largest uranium mine and Soekor, the oil exploration group closely linked with the Mossgas oil refinery and the oil platform off the Mossel Bay coast.  He also project managed the installation of the City of Cape Town’s 107 emergency centre which formed an integral part of the City’s Olympic bid.

Whilst at Soekor he wrote ProLib as a ‘labour of love’ for his wife who had just become the Librarian at Somerset House Preparatory.

Bastion Primary has been using both ProLib and ProText for many years now and we are very pleased with the products (especially with a large school of almost 2000 learners). It is extremely user friendly and support is always just a phone call away. The problem which Jackie cannot fix, must still be invented. We thank you for a no nonsense product that gets the job done!

That software quickly became the software of choice for many school libraries.  Jackie realised that there was a need for a professionally run computer software house serving the Education sphere and so he formed ProGen.

Our school moved from a manual system to ProText a few years ago. The transition was effortless and we have been receiving a lot of praise from the WCED regarding the system and how up to date everything is. When the WCED request a report, it is there with just the click of a button. It has saved our school a lot of time and money, as we can now keep clear track of all the textbooks in the school. If you don't have time to waste and want to have an accurate and efficient system, ProText is my recommendation for your school. You can't go wrong!
