Our Story
The company ethos is to provide professionally developed management software and to give excellent software support and training.
ProGen was founded in 1995. The owner, Jackie Brear, was in the first batch of Computer Scientists to come out of Rhodes University so he has considerable IT experience.
Over the years Jackie has managed some of South Africa’s largest and most complicated IT sites, such as Rossing Uranium, the world’s largest uranium mine and Soekor, the oil exploration group closely linked with the Mossgas oil refinery and the oil platform off the Mossel Bay coast. He also project managed the installation of the City of Cape Town’s 107 emergency centre which formed an integral part of the City’s Olympic bid.
Whilst at Soekor he wrote ProLib as a ‘labour of love’ for his wife who had just become the Librarian at Somerset House Preparatory.
That software quickly became the software of choice for many school libraries. Jackie realised that there was a need for a professionally run computer software house serving the Education sphere and so he formed ProGen.
That was 26 years ago. Now the company own and manage five software systems specifically designed for South African schools:
ProEd: an admin system
ProLib: a Library Management System
ProText: a school Textbook management system
ProAssets: an asset management system specifically designed for schools and colleges
ProTime: a sophisticated Time Tabling system that is currently in beta testing.
